[cobirds] Tempel Grove (Bent) and Lamar Truck Plaza (Prowers) 5/6/14

We went to Tempel's Grove (Bent) first thing this morning to try for looks and better photos of Swainson's Warbler seen yesterday.  Bird is apparently gone.  However, that is one shy bird and other visitors in the very near future should have it on their minds.  As stated yesterday, best place to look would be in the dry leaves s of the canal road on the east side of Rd 35 from the road to well east of the Melody Tempel bench.  Mr. Tempel ran a spray hose in there today and it was highly attractive to birds in need of a bath and drink.

WOOD THRUSH - first found and reported by Duane yesterday.  It was much more cooperative today and could be seen from the county road looking east into the grassy area around the caretaker's home just s of the canal road.  PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO THE YARD AND PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL OF VEHICLES TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS ON ROAD 35.  THIS IS ACTIVE FARM COUNTRY, IRRIGATION TIME, ETC.  VEHICLES OF ALL TYPES GOING NORTH AND SOUTH ON ROAD 35.  WORD HAS IT TWO BIRDERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF GOOD BIRDS AND WANDERING AIMLESSLY AROUND ON THE ROAD WERE ALMOST HIT BY A CAR VERY RECENTLY!

Other birds:
FOY Olive-sided Flycatcher
Least Flycatcher (at least 2)
Wilson's Warbler (at least 5 - what is going on with them this spring?)
Hermit Thrush (at least 6 - ditto?)
Ovenbird (2)
Lincoln's Sparrow (1)
House Wrens appear to be attempting to nest in the elevated box over the bench

Lamar Truck Plaza (Prowers), north end of Lamar a few miles north of the Arkansas River
LAUGHING GULL (an adult missing a foot was seen scrounging scraps among the semis and cars in the lots north and east of the restaurant).  It flew off.  Later seen in the company of 2 Ring-billed Gulls on private gravel ponds near the Arkansas River ne of the Cow Palace Motel.  Places it might show up in the future: the new City-owned fishing pond basically across the street to the east from the Cow Palace or the rendering plant at the west end of the huge cattle feed lot near the junction of US50/287 nw of town.

Total for the Lamar Area this visit (roughly a 5-mile radius circle centered on downtown) since 4/24: 123 species
