Re: [cobirds] Correction:Chico Basin Ranch September 12. 2024

Hi Julie,
There were about 40 Sage Thrashers just west of banding, foraging all over the fields. The 22 we mentioned were counted in one tree that they were flying in and out of, it was crazy. (Birders, please don't follow that road as it curves south toward the Casita house, that would take you out of the birder-approved banding area)

In other areas, highlights were Red-naped Sapsucker, female Indigo Bunting, 3 Blue Grosbeaks, Cassin's Vireo, Willow Flycatcher, Cassin's Kingbird, and a single Townsend's Warbler. Lots of young Spizellas, which made it challenging but fun. There was a Greater Roadrunner on the north side of Hanover Rd, 1/2 mile or so after the road loses the sharp curves and goes straight east.

Thanks Julie, for the work you're all doing and the informative reports.

Glad to hear there are birds elsewhere- there were not many birds at the Ranch today. Clear Spring Ranch had lots of birds around and I am guessing Barr Lake had another good banding day. If we all had a day like Chico did today I would wonder what is going on with the birds. Maybe the Hurricane Francine/ Tropical storm will blow in some different birds. So be on the lookout.

5 New Birds
Wilson's Warbler- 1
Hammond's Flycatcher- 1
House Wren- 1
Blue Grosbeak- 1
Green-tailed Towhee- 1

2 Recaptures

Thanks to the birders that came out that shared the Sage Thrasher sighting. They mentioned that there was @22 Sage Thrashers by trees along road west of banding station.

The banding station will be open this week through Saturday from Sunrise until @ 11:30am.
Be sure to sign up on the Aiken Audubon Website (www.aikenaudubon.com) for gaining access to the ranch.

Stop by the banding station if you are on the ranch and share your sightings.

Have a good day,
