The "100% Confirmed by Merlin" Grand County Team (Michael Dougherty, Peter Stoltz, Jake Shorty, Nate Bond, and I) had a most excellent birding adventure. The weather was absolutely perfect- almost no wind and clear skies- probably conditions only seen once every 30 years or so.

We started our day near Corduroy Canyon well before sunrise looking for owls. No hoots to be heard or found, but just before the sun peaked over the Canyon walls, we found a skulky green tail towhee- our first bird of they day!

From there the day was off and running. Nice and birdy through and through. No great rarities, but a Western Sandpiper, some late season cranes circling, a Clark's grebe, a common nighthawk, a handful of lingering sage thrashers, and a Townsend's warbler at 10,800 ft were some highlights.

But our day had a true cherry on top:  around 8 pm, at the Ace Hardware parking lot in Grandby, where we were wrapping up for the day, our team captain, Michael Dougherty looked up at a power-line poll and found a perched Great Horned Owl. What a grand way to end our day reaching 94 species at almost 150% of par.

We all had a blast and look forward to next year's competition!

Cheers,
