Re: [cobirds] Lead Free Fishing Gear

Thanks for the reminder, John.  I believe a couple of Colorado Audubon groups are working to educate others on this issue.

For many years, lead based fishing weights and jigs have been used around the world. Unfortunately, lead is a very toxic substance that is extremely harmful to humans and wildlife. Bird hunters used to use lead shot, but many have moved away from these shells in favor of steel shot. Fishermen I think have been slower to the cause, but need to eliminate lead products from their fishing gear. When ducks eat gravel for their crops and ingest lead weights or pellets, the results are fatal. Then secondary feeders like hawks, eagles and condors that eat lead in the flesh of ducks and geese, will also have fatal results.

I did a little web research and found the following website regarding lead-free fishing gear. There are many establishments selling lead free gear and you should be able to find what you need.

Consider a Christmas gift to yourself, that will also be a healthy solution for the birds as well.
