Re: [cobirds] timing of Great Horned Owl duetting

Hi Peter,

I heard my first Great Horned Owl of the fall singing in my neighborhood just yesterday morning. This is definitely the very start of their singing season, but I don't think it's ridiculously early.

Hi owl experts,

I'm used to hearing individual Great Horned Owls hooting intermittently nearly any month of the year near my house. Courtship duetting doesn't usually seem to pick up until November. This year, however, a pair has been duetting just about every night for the last couple of weeks in an area about a quarter-mile across. There was a successful nest nearby this spring. These owls are doing the full pair display, perching near each other and hooting frequently while bowing.

Is this expected so "early" in the season? Have others seen/heard summer duetting?

Thanks,
Peter Ruprecht
