[cobirds] More birding in NE Colorado

Okay, so it was hot, but there were good birds and even better birding out there today in NE Colorado.

John Vanderpoel and I continued with our little group from Sterling first thing this morning by taking Logan County Road 93 south from I-76, the Red Lion exit.  We didn’t have too much (except Loggerhead Shrikes, there must have been 10+ along the road) until we got to the ranch about 6 miles south of the Interstate.  Here we found very large numbers of sparrows, mainly Lark Buntings and Lark Sparrows but also Chipping, Brewer’s, Clay-colored and Vesper.  Once again, just south of this spot, along LCR 93 between LCR 44 and 46 there were Greater Prairie Chickens—at least 10 were counted crossing and along side the road.

In Julesburg we had one Calliope and one Rufous Hummingbird as well as a Baltimore Oriole, two American Redstarts, a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches and a Warbling Vireo at the elementary school.  But follow Norm’s sadder but wiser tale and only visit on a weekend or holiday!  The Lion’s Rest Stop had a Cassin’s Vireo, White-breasted Nuthatch and several Red-headed Woodpeckers.

At Jumbo we had a Black-bellied Plover that was very unusually brown on its back, a Willet (both in Logan County) and a Common Tern in Sedgwick County.  Multiple Bell’s Vireo continue to sing below the Little Prewitt Dam.
