[cobirds] Bird ID Help

Hi Cobirders.  Yesterday at  Chatfield at about 5 p.m. I saw 2 Robin-ish size birds creating a huge ruckus in a Cottonwood tree and "falling" to the ground together in a sort of tangle.  They tangled on the ground & then flew back up to the top of the Cottonwood.  They were shrieking and making a call that I have never heard before.  Several times they sounded just like an old-fashioned whistle.  I had no binocs (I was out for a run) & as best I could tell they were light colored birds with fairly long tails, and what looked like buff or gray colored wings.  White parts to the tail.  Could they be Northern Mockingbirds?

Thanks much for any insight!
