Christi McCarren and I crisscrossed Holyoke with Guillaume Péron and the Kellner Gang. Highlights were similar but not identical
Christi and I arrived at the Holyoke Cemetery to hear Mr PINE WARBLER singing from out our windows, a most excellent start to the day. We texted Joey and crew who showed up, finding (among other things) a imm male EASTERN TOWHEE. Other birds of interest at the cemetery included 2 NASHVILLE WARBLERS (apparently one eastern, one western), a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 2 White-throated Sparrows, a Field Sparrow, a Brown Creeper and 12 RB Nuthatches.
At the central park, we had the BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER found by Team Kellner, and at least one of the two PALM WARBLERS seen earlier by Guillaume.
Elsewhere in town, we had two more NASHVILLE WARBLERS (subspecies unknown), a juv YB SAPSUCKER (at courthouse), a female-type PURPLE FINCH (in yard near high school), a NORTHERN CARDINAL and a White-winged Junco near the e. end of Akron at the n. end of Holyoke. Also, another 9 or so RB Nuthatches
We could not re-find the Philly Vireo nor the Plumbeous Vireo at the courthouse, but did re-find the RED-EYED VIREO and had a bright late-ish WARBLING VIREO, the subsp of which I should've attended to more closely. A Prairie Merlin also cruised overhead. Our total of Myrtle Warblers for Holyoke was nearly 100, OC Warblers nearly 50.
It was interesting that the entire town seemed full of birds. The day started windless, then a strong northerly blew. Birds seemed to be streaming through town. When the northerly gave up, around 11 am, the birds were gone just as quickly as the wind dropped, in about a 10 minute timespan. Pretty weird and amazing.
Jumbo Reservoir had many pelicans, cormorants, and dabbling ducks, but little else, alas.
Enjoy this fall!
