[cobirds] Turkey Creek Ranch News, El Paso County

Hi, everyone.

Today we (Jeanne, Beth Payne, and I) were headed out to Turkey Creek Ranch, but found out it is no longer open to us. The sign reads that TCR is closed to all recreation activities and to all visitors. The only authorized activities there now are the Mounted Honor Guard and the Fire Station.

I know many of you like to bird there, but even with military ID it is off limits!

We also found a bit of bad news at Adams Open Space in the city of Fountain. First we found a tree that had fallen across the main trail, and then we found that the new bridge built last fall is GONE! Fountain had some terrible rains in the last couple of weeks, so it apparently was washed away by surging water on Jimmy Camp Creek. We could not get to the other side of the creek and there were only about a dozen species around. The one good bird we saw was a MISSISSIPPI KITE.

We wrapped up the morning at Big Johnson Reservoir. Best birds there were a flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds and one LONG-BILLED CURLEW.

Good birding, all.
