[cobirds] BLACKBURNIAN WARBER & CANADA WARBLER; Prewitt Reservoir (Logan and Washington County, respectively)

On today's Denver Field Ornithologists to Prewitt Reservoir we found a fall
male Blackburnian Warbler below the dam in the "Black Locust" grove. This
grove is to the west of the Logan County parking lot below the dam ( Open
Goggle Maps and copy/paste the following into the search box: 40.435750,
-103.357993 )

Later in the early afternoon we found a Red-eyed Vireo, female
Black-and-White Warbler and a Canada Warbler in the inlet canal grove ( Open
Goggle Maps and copy/paste the following into the search box: 40.404031,
-103.390887 )

Prewitt Reservoir has risen slightly since a week ago and there is no longer
shoreline along the road to the inlet canal area. :-(

[cobirds] Baird's Sparrows--El Paso County

This morning, I was able to find 3 Baird's Sparrows along Drennan Rd west of Hemmingway.  Many birders I came across had seen several Baird's in their searches.  I'm guessing there are more than 4-5 Baird's Sparrow in the area.  Great Colorado bird!!  Photos of the bird can be seen below:

[cobirds] Hale Ponds, Yuma County - Alder Flyatcher

Greetings All.

I spent 5 or so hours wandering around the Hale Ponds area. Like most of NE Colorado, migrant passerines were few. I don't know what happened to our Yellow Warbler passage, that should have peaked a week ago, nor our Wilson's Warbler passage, which should be in full force right now.

So, I had about 6 Wilson's and 6 Yellows, but also 6 American Redstarts. It's a weird fall.
The main highlight was an Alder Flycatcher, which I managed some halfway decent shots of.
Also, 2 MacGillivray's Warblers, a Dusky Flycatcher and a Hammond's were pretty since I could have... well.. into KS at the time.
There were still several GC Flycatchers about and a spanking male Indigo Bunting was nice. The 4 RE Vireos could have been migrants or local breeders.

I wonder if the seeming lackluster passerine migration is due to the diffuse lushness of the landscape. Could it be that the birds are really spread out, the opposite of fall 2012????

Good Birding

[cobirds] Hummingbird ID help, Larimer

Yesterday (Aug 30), I went to W Lake St in Fort Collins to get some photographs of a Calliope Hummingbird first reported by N Komar that has been around for the last week. There were several Hummers zipping around and feeding off a healthy clump of pinkish orange Agastache flowers. While shooting a perched Calliope, I heard the distinctive wing buzz of a Broad-tail over my left shoulder. I turned to the sound and saw nothing of course, returning to the Calliope I found it was replaced by a different bird. I saw a red throat and assumed that the new bird was a male Broad-tailed because this and the trill that preceded its arrival. I shot 3 pics before it flew away. After reviewing the photos I'm not convinced its a Broad-tailed and think it could be a Ruby-throated instead or  maybe a hybrid of. I do not see any rufous anywhere, the wingtips are straight and narrow (eliminates Black-chinned), and bill is straighter and not too curved. I can see the slightest light/white under the chin only after extreme magnification. The white line on a Broad-tailed that starts at the chin goes through the eye and continues around the back edge of the gorget is indistinct to absent. Lastly, it seems slimmer than most Broad-tails that I have seen. I have never seen a Ruby-throated before so I am asking anybody with knowledge to help me identify this puzzler (at least to me).

[cobirds] Little Blue Heron at Alamosa NWR

This-past week I saw an immature Little Blue Heron on the Auto Tour Loop at the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. The bird is white, and has a prominent blue base to the bill. It was not re-seen yesterday but should be watched for in this area.

I lead a bird trip yesterday to Alamosa hotspots, and we had a nice morning. Eastern Kingbird, many species of shorebirds, Blue Grosbeak, Osprey, and Townsend's Warbler were some of the highlights.
Why is it even the common birds look so different this time of year! Keeps it interesting for sure.....

[cobirds] Kiowa, Prowers, Bent Highlights

Greetings All

Today I headed south to avoid winds.
Mark Peterson told me to look at a couple reservoirs in Kiowa, long dry, but no so after recent deluges.
The first sizable pond has no name... mostly a flooded farm area, just south of Eads. On west side of 287/385. I pulled over off the shoulder (this is best done about sunrise). There was a fair number of shorebirds, 8 Solitaries and 2 Sanderlings being the most interesting. Far more unusual was a blue SNOW GOOSE feeding on emergent grass amongst Killdeer and Baird's Sandpipers

Farther south is Jett Lake, or what I think is called Jett Lake. It is easily visible from the freeway, which is where I first looked at it from. Then I drove a bit south to the next road, went west just past a fence, and then followed a two-track north to the edge of the reservoir. It had goodly numbers of shorebirds, the best being 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS in the sw. corner (not found a couple hours later) and a Pectoral Sand.

Neegronda, Neenoshe, and Ne No Spah (sorry, to lazy to look it up) were not very interesting. The latter will likely be very sweet as water levels drop

At Lamar Community College Woods there was, per usual a N Cardinal... and not unexpected, but not usual for me there... a RB Woodpecker. Of more note was a PHILADELPHIA VIREO... a bright bird, entirely yellow beneath. Also present was RE Vireo and Cassin's Vireo. There is a funky Myiarchus flycatcher there. Probably a bright Ash-throated.

At Tempel Grove there was another Red-eyed Vireo, and Ovenbird, 2 American Redstarts, and a MacGillivray's Warbler.

An the Neenoshe Locust Grove, there was an ALDER FLYCATCHER, which flew off into the cottonwoods and tamarisk bowl that once was mostly under water. Also there was an Indigo Bunting and just a nice assortment of stuff, especially for Kiowa County, such as Cassin's Vireo and 7 Lazuli Buntings.

[cobirds] Black Tern and Chimney Swifts (Jefferson), Red Crossbill (Arapahoe)

On Aug 28 a lone Red Crossbill flew over St Mary Catholic Church along Prince Street in Littleton (Arapahoe), heading north and calling all the way. The calls were of the Type 2 Ponderosa pine form.

On Aug 29 I made my first visit to Hine Lake in Robert A. Easton Regional Park, off the end of West Coal Mine near West Bowles (Jeffco). Low clouds and a smattering of rain had brought a moderate number of swallows down low over the lake. They were mostly Barn, but among them were two Chimney Swifts, apparently a decent find for JeffCo based on few eBird entries.

Late today Aug 30 a Black Tern was at the JeffCo corner of the South Platte Reservoir. It winged around right in the corner there for a time and then went south across C470 toward Chatfield Res., where I technically was able to add it to my Douglas Co list as it went south to the dam and then I lost it from view. South Platte Reservoir was otherwise nearly bird free.

[cobirds] DFO Trip, Sept. 20, Boulder County

To anyone interested in this trip:  In my DFO description of this trip, I said it would be "easy".  That is because it will only be on parts of the Fowler and north Spring Brook trails.  We will be walking south from the end of Boulder County Rd. 67 or no more than two miles -- about a mile up to an irrigation ditch where these two trails meet the Goshawk Ridge Trail.  (If we did the whole Spring Brook loop and part of the Fowler Trail we would walk almost 4 miles!)

This is a very birdy area as it includes many habitats (including open ponderosa pine woodland, a burned area of pine forest, and lots of brushy slopes-- plums and chokecherries galore this year).  As of this week, two Lewis Woodpeckers were still in the burn area!

[cobirds] CANADA WARBLER, Canon City Riverwalk, FreCo

This morning I found a male Canada Warbler on the eastern section of the Riverwalk.  It was moving around in the vines and lower branches of the large cottonwoods along the trail about 200 yds. west of the old MacKenzie Ave parking area.  (The old parking area is about a 1/4 mile walk from the present parking area at MacKenzie Ave.)

Numerous Wilson Warblers and Western Tanagers were also seen along the trail.

Subject: Paradise Tanager escaped from the Bird World Building at the Denver Zoo
To: "rba@cfobirds.org" <rba@cfobirds.org>

Hello,

Unfortunately late yesterday afternoon (8/28) at 6 pm a female Paradise tanager escaped from the Bird World building at the Denver zoo. Zoo staff did observe the bird several times during the next couple of hours then could not observe it due to night fall.

We began early this morning looking for the bird and one person may have seen it in close proximity to its last sighting from the previous evening, but a second sighting did not occur to confirm the original re-sighting from this morning.

Attached please find a picture of this 4-5 inch long tanager. So birders in the Denver City Park or Park Hill area please be advised if they observe this bird please contact me at (720) 337-1514.

Thanks for your assistance.

[cobirds] Baird's Sparrow, El Paso County, redux.

Please excuse my earlier  post this morning.  I tried dictating it and it got sent by accident.  I am relatively new to iPhone and SIRi needs lessons in language recognition.  I did not see a bear  but a Bairds Sparrow about 830 am this morning with George Cresswell and Cicci Lee
on Drennan road about a quarter mile west of Hemingway.  The bird was quite cooperative and sat on the top wire of a fence for 3 minutes allowing lots of photographs. Hell, I know the difference between fur and feathers.

[cobirds] RMBO Barr Lake Banding, 8/29/14

On our last training/practice day before our official opening tomorrow, we banded 51 new birds.  Also recaught the CANADA WARBLER that was banded yesterday.  He was caught in one of the new nets close to the road just south of the banding station.  Here's the breakdown on the new birds of the day:

Western Flycatcher 1
House Wren 7
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 8
Wilson's Warbler 31

Lots of birds around!

[cobirds] Scissor-tailed Flycatcher?

My husband and I may travel south from Centennial on Sunday to do some birding. I'm wonder if the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are still around? If yes, could someone give me good directions from I-25? Thanks!

We are planning to hit Bear Creek Nature Center, Fountain Creek and Sonderman Park on the way. Any other suggestions would be entertained.

Thanks

[cobirds] Baird's Sparrow, El Paso County

Hi, cobirders.

This morning at 8:13 a.m., Jeanne and I saw the Baird's Sparrow on Drennan Road about .25 mile west of Hemmingway Rd. It sat up on a fence wire for nearly 20 seconds before flying out into the field. A couple of minutes later it returned to the fence and was also spotted by John Drummond.

We do not know if there are more than one Baird's Sparrows as some have suggested, but we got great looks at this one.

Good birding, everyone.

[cobirds] Baird's Sparrow El Paso County

The immature Baird's Sparrow was relocated Wednesday afternoon near the
intersection of Drennan and Hemmingway. Below are the GPS coordinates that
will get you close (two different formats for whichever GPS unit you might
have).

38.752420, -104.503260
38°45'08.7"N 104°30'11.7"W

The bird was seen briefly in the morning by Glenn Walbek along Drennan Road,
but in the afternoon I relocated it along Hemmingway Rd. I saw the bird on
and off for about one and a half minutes and then lost it. After a two hour
search our group could not refind it. :-( The area is pretty expansive
and the bird is there "somewhere". There are lots of other sparrow species
present so look at each bird. Below is my eBird checklist (with a photo or
three).
