[cobirds] Harris's Sparrow, Carbondale continues

Hi all

Our Harris’s Sparrow continues at our yard this evening. Of interest, I watched it several times pick up (different) whole Black Oil Sunflower seeds, but always fail to crack them, which surprised me. Our House Finches (and slum weavers too aka House Sparrows) however have no problem at all with the sunflower. The Harris’s seems to be feeding mainly on leftovers, and on a few choke cherry fruits and rose hips. Seems to be doing just fine, and is active in chasing away the House Sparrows when they get too close.

Good birding all

PS Personal highlights from a fun-filled weekend on local CBCs included Common Loon on both the Roaring Fork and the Aspen counts, plus three Northern Shrikes and hundreds of American Robins – the latter surprising to me given the snow cover and recent cold temps.. Did not hear of any remarkable finds by others on the CBCs. Off to the UK for Christmas – back in the New Year – Happy Holidays all, and wishing you good health and bird-filled 2014
