The 3rd Annual Flagler Christmas Bird Count was held Sunday December 29th with 12 participants helping out. Flagler is fairly unusual for a Colorado CBC in that it there are no mountains and no water! That combination was apparent in the species total for the count—39. But still, we managed 15 species new for the count (okay—it is only the 3rd year).
Of note was the 99.69% reduction I the number of Lapland Longspurs; down to 70 from 22,374 recorded in 2012. Even so, this count remains what is probably your best bet for actually seeing one of these nifty winter birds in Colorado and I think that all of those who wanted to see one, got to see one yesterday. Other species of note were three Snow Geese, our first ever recorded and the only waterfowl whatsoever; four Long-eared Owls; and our first ever Black-billed Magpie.
