I spent about three hours at Barr Lake this afternoon. The lake is about 75% frozen. Open areas had abundant geese coming and going (Snow, Cackling and Canada seen) and the normal duck suspects. I also had one male Barrow's Goldeneye quite a ways out on the water (with some Commons). Other notable species was a juvenile Harris Sparrow (with a flock of White-Crowns), one Swamp Sparrow (in the ditch), and I heard (but never saw) a flock of Sandhill Cranes. Gulls were few, Raptors were plentiful (7 Bald Eagles, 7 Red-Tailed Hawks, 2 Rough-Legged Hawks, 2 Kestral, 2 Northern Harrier, 1 Coopers). Not a rarity, but lots of fun, was a juvenile Northern Shrike which let me approach within about 30 feet, all the while calling and clicking, and making all sorts of noises.
Photos of some of the raptors can be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aphelionart/
