Visitors:
Amy Manning, the sole attendee at the DFO trip we led at the hawk watch today and was also at our trip this spring at Dinosaur Ridge, was very good at finding hawks as well as describing where they were – which is an art in itself, and not commonly seen among birders. Since it was a weekend there were many visitors asking questions about what we were doing, and were fascinated with the raptor migration we described, HMANA and other hawk watches. Amy was very generous, lending a few of them her binoculars to look through. One couple was interested in the spotting scope so I let them look through it, and they took a picture of it for the brand name. A family of 5 having a reunion in Denver also very interested asking many questions. A young man from Colombia working in Denver for 3 years asked questions about what the spotting scope was, so I let him look through it; he also asked questions about the weather station. I also explained the large numbers of raptors at Veracruz, and the reason for it to young man with recently moved from Texas of Pakistani extraction, as well as to 2 others.

Weather:
Light winds from the NNE, temperature 15-18°C, no cloud cover, haziness due to wildfires in the NW with limited clear visibility to 6 km only.

Raptor Observations:
Slow day today with mostly distant raptors, but we still had 22 raptors migrating. most of them seen below or at the horizon to the east going over Green Mountain, or over the eastern end of Lookout Mountain. Golden Eagle juvenile 1, with proximal white and broad black band distally on the tail, but no white wing patches, and a strong dihedral. Bird of the day: Adult dark morph RT 1. Non-migrant raptors: Northern Harrier inexplicably flying north since this is not to its natural habitat, RT 5.

Non-raptor Observations:
Common Raven 6, Mountain Chickadee 2, Canada Goose 32, White-throated Swift 8, Steller's Jay 1.

Predictions:
WNW>NW>North which hasn't been a good wind for migrants at this site, so will take a much-needed day off from counting. We'll be back either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the winds.
