[cobirds] Bill Kaempfer

For those of you who know Bill Kaempfer, long time prominent birder in the Boulder area now moved to Florida, I inquired via email how he was treated by Hurricane Helene.  He lives at the north tip of Tampa Bay on a hill 40 ASL.  He said he and his property came out of it with minor cuts and scrapes but that many of his friends to the south in St. Petersburg suffered storm surge damage to their properties and vehicles.  A favorite nearby hotspot, Fort DeSoto south of St. Pete was completely underwater and its reopening is unknown.  Bill is the compiler for the Fort DeSoto CBC and hopes it will be open by then.

Bill told me Peter Burke recently visited and they were actually chasing lifers in Miami on the east side of Florida when the hurricane hit Big Bend on the night of Thursday September 24th.  Peter probably has many war stories beyond the cursory summary above.

Like the sticker on my frig says, “Mother Nature Bats Last”.
