Birdcast suggested we would see a Medium Level migrant flight last night - so I was expecting to see SOME turnover at Clear Spring Ranch banding today.
Got my nets up even before much light this morning and WHAM. Sparrows! 55 netted on the first run at 7:00, 50 more at 8:00, 50 more at 9:00, and a few more at 10:00 when I started closing for the heat. (36o at 6:30, 84o at 11:00!).
Almost everything caught was in large flocks. My biggest ever one-day haul for White-crowned and Lincolns Sparrows, the biggest flock of Chipping Sparrows in several weeks, and even a flock of all male American Goldfinch. And a few warblers and kinglets were mixed in, but mostly sparrows.
165 birds netted today, about 100 banded, including:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Chipping Sparrow - 74 netted, 15 banded
Brewer's Sparrow - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 25
Song Sparrow - 3
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow - 39
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow - 4
(FOS) White-throated Sparrow - 1
Pink-sided Junco - 1
Oregon Junco - 1
Spotted Towhee - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 1
American Goldfinch - 6
I didn't get much chance to watch for other birds passing by - but I did see (eBird rare) one W Wood Pewee perched up on a net pole lat morning - my first flycatcher in about two weeks.
Have a good week,
Steve Brown
