[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/9/24

Today there were lots of sparrows, especially juncos, flitting around in the trees and bushes at net level, but most managed to avoid getting caught. We did catch our 3rd hawk of the season - a male Sharp-shinned - the first time since 2013 that we've had 3 hawks in one season.  We also had our first rare warbler - a hatch year female Magnolia Warbler - which was our last bird of the morning.

Total new birds was 18; we filled up our time processing another 12 birds that were recaptures - everything from Wilson's Warblers still trying to put on enough fat to move on to juncos that may very well spend the winter at Barr.

Here are the 18 new birds:

Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Hermit Thrush 2
Magnolia Warbler 1
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
White-throated Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 8
Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2

Weather permitting, we are banding Tuesday through Sunday mornings (closed Mondays).  There is a public session most weekday mornings from 7:30-8:30, and three time slots on weekends, at 8, 9, and 10 a.m.  There is a $7 fee and registration is required – click here to register!

Let me know if you have any questions,
