[cobirds] Denver CBC initial tally

Saturday, a beautiful day for a CBC! The compilation meeting and potluck
was well attended and everyone enjoyed the facilities provided by State
Parks and Wildlife. The preliminary tally gave us 92 species. This is down
somewhat, but not all areas reported in and feeder watchers typically
contribute a few species seen nowhere else. Obviously the extreme cold
weather a week prior to the count didn't help as there were about 10 species
seen a few days prior to "count week" that were not recorded on count day,
nor count week. There will be a final report submitted in a month to the
Denver Field Ornithologist's for inclusion into the Lark Bunting newsletter.

Highlights:

Brant - 1 - Chatfield Reservoir (open water and in campground loop-C)
Greater Scaup - ~30! birds in one, cohesive flock along the South Platte
River south of Bowles.
Long-tailed Duck- 2 - South Platte Park Reservoir
Red-necked Grebe - Count week only :-(
Northern Saw-whet Owl - One found by the intrepid Randy Lentz deep in a
tangle along the Platte River
Say's Phoebe - 1
Chihuahuan Raven - 1 again this year
Winter Wren - 1 - up Plum Creek in Chatfield State Park
Gray Catbird - 2! - Chatfield State Park (upstream from Kingfisher
Bridge...one on each side of the river...yes, different locations, different
birds)
Golden-crowned Sparrow - 1 - Red Rocks Park (still there...4 years running!)

Thanks to the more that 120 people (PLUS Feeder Watchers!) that participated
this year! What a great turnout! Visiting and renewing old friendships at
the potluck was a wonderful end to a wonderful day in the field.

Maybe next year we won't have a hard freeze prior to the count!
