[cobirds] Loveland Swan, Highland Lake Area (Larminer and Weld Counties)

At Lower Hoffman Lake this morning (7:30 AM - 9 AM): More of the lake surface has melted off so there were a bazillion Canada Geese milling about. OK, probably around 1000 at any one time. Also:

• I saw only one Trumpeter Swan, an adult. Unless this is a different bird than I saw 2 weeks ago (unlikely) then it appears the juvenile has either flown off (also unlikely) or didn't make it. I spoke with a trio of birders who have been watching the swans pretty regularly and they reported that the juvenile hadn't been moving around much and had appeared ill about 10 days ago. They didn't spot it last weekend so they believe it to have died.  :-(
• Bald Eagles (Juveniles) - 2 in the trees around the lake
• Red-Breasted, Common, and Hooded Mergansers 
• Common Goldeneye pair
• Belted Kingfisher - 1
• Red-Winged Blackbirds - 4 males, all in full display mode
• Wood Ducks - 1 pair
• Black-Capped Chickadees - 4
• American Crow - 2
• Widgeon - 2
• Red-Headed Ducks - many scattered in with the geese
• Hairy Woodpecker - one pair
• Mallards - 40-ish
• Magpies - 4

Just outside of Loveland, near the interchange of hwy 34 and I-25 were 2 Rough-legged Hawks on power poles to the west of the interstate.

Also did a quick tour of the area around Highland Lake in Weld County. No eagles at the lake itself but I did spot 4 Juvenile Balds in trees along the roads north of the lake. Also...many Red-Tailed Hawks and Kestrels, as usual. Also spotted 4 Northern Harriers, all females, in the areas north of the lake.
