Birders,
With the upcoming Snow Goose festival in Lamar this weekend, birders may
want to venture west to John Martin Reservoir. All the ice is off area
lakes, and with open water, multitudes of migrants are passing through.
From the dam at John Martin Reservoir, I observed an immature Glaucous
Gull (extreme white end of the spectrum) and adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull during a brief visit on Feb. 19. Conspicuous new arrivals included
Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, and increasing numbers of American
White Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants.
Grassland enthusiasts may enjoy returning flocks of alternate-plumage
McCown's Longspurs at the stock pond 8 miles north of Las Animas on Bent
County Road 10. This is just south of Adobe Creek Reservoir. If it is
dry, sit in your vehicle and watch for the swirling flocks to drop from
the sky, and briefly land as they come repeatedly to the pond to drink.
A significant spring snow storm is forecast for later today and
tomorrow, and may either impact travel conditions on dirt roads, or make
them impassible. So far, nothing but clouds and wind here.
