Usually I would list any rare species in the title line - but I had too many good birds today banding at Clear Spring Ranch. The morning started out normally, 5-6 Yellow Warblers by 8:00, then slow, but a wave of migrants definitely arrived about 9:45. Maybe the cloud cover we had kept them moving, after the heavy rain last night. ??? But it was fun. Birds included:
FOS Cassin's Vireo (juv), a first for me at this location - photo below
Red-eyed Vireo -(ad) my second this week - that too has never happened
Northern Waterthrush (juv), okay - that happens all the time here
FOS Clay-colored Sparrow (ad) - eBird marked it rare, but I have been getting them regularly in Augusts
FOS Lazuli Bunting - second-year male, late for a FOS
FOS Western Kingbird - (2 juv F), these rarely get caught in the nets - they usually stay too high
FOS Bullock's Oriole, (ad F)
FOS Wilson's Warbler (ad F), also late for a FOS
and 20 more Yellow Warblers - 99 for the week, previous best FALL was 68! (and a flock of 150+ Chipping Sparrows in the shade as I left.)
But besides that, there were very few local birds around again. It is surprising to see so many migrants with so few local birds around.
Happy Migration,
