On August 14 there were about half a dozen birders hoping to see the Zone-tailed Hawk.
-- Weather conditions were not helpful. It was very dark, cool, and windy. The Turkey Vultures
and Zone-tailed appeared to be roosting in the trees along the stream. A group took off about
0800 and I had a brief look at the Zone-tail but when it flew behind a tree, I lost it and it was
not seen again all day. The Turkey Vultures did not return in numbers until mid afternoon when
weather conditions had improved.
Phone communications are not available on the road unless you have the right service provider.
So if you want to wander around and remain in contact with others, it would be wise to bring two-way
radios. Bring plenty of water and some food because the search may take much longer than you
expected. Chairs are also very useful. Bring a scope if you have one.
