[cobirds] DFO's Big Year 2018 plucks goal of 333 species and flies on

The Denver Field Ornithologists met and maybe already surpassed its annual Big Year goal with birds enjoyed on field trips in the last few days. At the start of the year we set a goal of 333 species for DFO's Big Year 2018 (species found on planned DFO field trips in all of Colorado). A small accounting error of 1 species has yet to be rectified before I can report with confidence which species met our goal, but it was either a Sanderling at Jumbo Reservoir in Sedgwick County on our Aug 20 trip, or the Red Knot at Prewitt Reservoir in Washington County on Aug 22. (Photos below). The DFO web page currently reports 334 species found (vs my accounting of 333, soon to be resolved). Either way we made it to our goal in just 8 months (lots of great free field trips and memories later, from all across the state).

* Go here for a list of species as they are added in order of discovery:
* And here for our Big Year list in a more expected recent taxonomic order:

DFO has more great trips at the end of August so we can expect to keep on flying toward a new goal. If we have a good fall migration we can add many more species. Maybe 365 species is a worthy new goal - one bird for each day of the year, so to speak. You can check out and register for field trips here, with October field trips becoming available soon. http://dfobirds.org/FieldTrips/UpcomingTrips.aspx

The success of our effort depends on DFO's field trip leaders, field trip schedulers, field trip committee, our data managers and web site designer. And, of course, the great trip participants. You are invited to join in the fun of chasing down our new goal. It means good birds and great places.
