[cobirds] National Public Lands Day volunteer opportunity, Sep. 27th, John Martin Reservoir

Birders and advocates for giving back,

This request for volunteers to help with habitat reclamation efforts to benefit endangered Piping Plovers and Least Terns is posted to cobirds with permission of the list moderator.

National Public Lands Day is held the last Saturday of September every year. This year, it falls on September 27th. I will be coordinating a volunteer effort at John Martin Reservoir (Bent County) for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Our goal is to manually pull weeds from a point on the south side of the reservoir that is “ground zero” in the recovery efforts for Piping Plovers in the state. For at least the last five years, we have provided habitat on National Public Lands Day for one or more pairs of Piping Plovers, with successful hatching and fledging occurring at a site that would otherwise be unacceptable to these barren-beach specialists. I have gotten a bit of a start on the project as the field season has wound down, but the scale of work needed is daunting. A majority of the plant cover is Russian Thistle, so long-sleeved shirts and sturdy leather gloves are essential. I will try to line up some extra pairs of gloves.

The Corps of Engineers will provide water and snacks, and John Martin State Park has offered to provide some free campsites at Lake Hasty Campground. The work day is officially slated to start at 8 a.m., and run through noon. If you can only help for an hour or two, you can still make a big difference.

Please contact me personally if you are interested, so I can help with accommodations and logistics.

Respectfully,

Duane Nelson
