I’m a volunteer at Greenwood Wildlife Rehab Center and I want to send out a huge thanks to all who enter their sightings into eBird, especially this time of year. As summer wanes, Greenwood always has a number of young birds that are ready to be released. For some species, the areas that they came from aren’t necessarily the best spots to return them to, once migration kicks into gear. We at Greenwood frequently turn to eBird to see where birds have recently been seen, providing suggestions for potential release spots. Also, when atypical species are admitted—for instance, staff are raising a young Common Poorwill; both a juvenile and an adult Common Nighthawk are currently under care—eBird’s data from recent years can highlight timing issues for release in the coming weeks. The birds face challenges a-plenty once they are released. But eBird data help us at least start them out in a decent location.
It’s not a typical use of eBird, I imagine. But it is a truly wonderful tool for Greenwood’s staff. We really appreciate everyone who takes the time to enter their Colorado lists. You just never know when you might be helping a formerly orphaned or abandoned young bird get a leg (or a wing) up on the next chapter of its life.
