Lynne Miller and I headed to Prewitt Reservoir today. The first geese
sighted were several small groups of snow geese that shown brilliantly in
the low angle sunlight against dark clouds. Beautiful! Little did we know
that we were about to witness a migration spectacle. On Prewitt Reservoir
there were approximately 15,000 snow geese and about 9,000 "white-cheeked"
geese with more coming in all the time. Pretty impressive for Prewitt and
more along the lines of what I would expect at Jumbo Reservoir further NE.
We then headed north and east from Prewitt. As we drove we witnessed
literally THOUSANDS of geese coming out of the NE and heading towards
Prewitt. I'm not sure if all landed on the lake or just passed the lake
heading further south. Snows were more common than "white-cheeked" by about
10 to 1. The birds flew overhead in "V's" and lines and "strings". Groups
of a hundred, other groups with a thousand birds. We stopped several times
in the next hour along the roads to watch in amazement. Then at
11:15am....it STOPPED. No matter how hard we tried we couldn't find a
single goose in the sky anywhere!! WOW!
Is this just normal migration in action? Did these birds sense the upcoming
cold front coming? Who knows. It was an amazing thing to watch and
experience.
