[cobirds] Long-tailed Duck on DFO Silverthorne and Grand Lake goldeneye trip

On Saturday, Paul Slingsby led a Denver Field Ornithologists field trip to Silverthorne and the Grand Lake area supporting the RMBO winter Barrow's Goldeneye count. Barrow's Goldeneyes were present in good numbers at both locations.

At the Blue River Water Treatment Plant outside of Silverthorne, there were at least 36 Barrow's Goldeneyes by count. The birds flew before we had a full count and we estimate 50 was a more likely number.

At Lake Granby, there was a single Long-tailed Duck among the hundreds of Common Goldeneyes seen from the west side of the lake.

Most of Shadow Mountain Lake was frozen with the exception of the northern portion on the lake adjacent to Grand Lake. The situation there was interesting. We counted 47 Barrow's Goldeneyes on these two lakes with the overwhelming majority on Grand Lake which had only a couple of Common Goldeneyes. Shadow Mountain, on the other hand, had many Common Goldeneyes but only a half dozen Barrow's Goldeneyes. Shadow Mountain also had two Hooded Mergansers.
