Good morning All,
Spent between 8 and 9 at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post this morning. The Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up right away under the upper apple tree after I put some seed out. After being joined by David Chartier from Colorado Springs, we watched at least 8 Rosy-Finches come and go from the cliffs to the west down to the rock wall and lower apple tree area to feed. There were at least 4 Black and one Brown-capped with the rest being Gray-crowned. Still no Hepburn's this season. The cliff area this group is using is above and to the west of the feeders - last year the Rosy's seemed to prefer to use the cliffs directly to the south.
We noticed that the birds were in a cliff area without any snow and with a greenish caste (lichen maybe). The mixed flock of Rosy's appeared to do some feeding on the rocks in this area. I have noticed in the past that a variety of birds (flicker, robins, solitaires, juncos, house finches) other than wrens use the cliff faces just like tree trunks poking in the crevices and nooks and crannies.
