[cobirds] Hooded Mergansers at Denver City Park

A Denver Field Ornithologists field trip to City Park yesterday produced a short species list highlighted by two Hooded Mergansers, apparently birds of the year. Eleven observers found 20 species with most of the heronry birds gone. The few lingering Double-crested Cormorants, Black-crowned Night Herons and Snowy Egrets were predominantly juveniles or immatures.

Mallard  12
Hooded Merganser  2     
Double-crested Cormorant  42     Many first year birds and young still on at least 3 nests in colony on Duck Lake
Snowy Egret  16     Mostly birds fledged in Ferril Lake heronry.
Black-crowned Night-Heron  9     2 adults. Others immature. 1 adult feeding young.
Cooper's Hawk  1
Red-tailed Hawk  1
Spotted Sandpiper  3
Mourning Dove  1
Chimney Swift  1
Belted Kingfisher  1
Northern Flicker (Red-shafted)  3
Black-billed Magpie  1
American Crow  2
Barn Swallow  30     Including fledged young
Black-capped Chickadee  1
European Starling  43
House Finch  1
House Sparrow  3
