With some anxiety, today I dialed the number in my address book for Joe Himmel. To my great joy the voice that answered was him. I asked how he was doing, he laughed that rich laugh of his and uttered a German phrase learned from his grandmother meaning "still on two legs". He has a bit of trouble getting to his car, but when he can (with the help of a cane or his daughter Susie), he still likes to check Lower Latham. Not being on COBIRDS, he was excited to learn about all the First State Records of late. He asked about other people more than he wanted to talk about himself. Typical Joe. The bottom line is Mr. Himmel seemed pretty darn good to me and it was uplifting. I think his secret is a good daily dose of Frederic Chopin on Sirius radio.
Just thought some of you would like to hear this report about a truly rare, wonderful bird who resides in Greeley (Weld).
