August 2013 Field Trips



Saturday, August 17
Flying J Ranch (Jeffco Open Space)

Limit 10 people, so contact leader at lee_farrell@comcast.net to register (preregistration required)  Photographers encouraged.
Meet at 8 a.m. at central parking lot, end of the entry road.  Travel south from Evergreen on County Highway 73 for 6.8 miles to the main trailhead entry road.  Or from U.S. Highway 285 at Aspen Park, take Barkley Road to County Highway 73.  Turn north and travel to the main trailhead entrance road (

A 3- to 4-hour hike.  We'll look for species associated with lodgepole and open ponderosa pine forest.  Approximately a 3.5-mile hike over maintained trails; some off-trail hiking.  Attendees should be comfortable hiking similar distances. Wear hiking boots; bring water and snacks.


Sunday, August 18
Roxborough State Park (Douglas County)

Meet leader at 7:30 a.m. at Roxborough Visitor Center.  To reach the park, take South Wadsworth Blvd. past Chatfield S.P. to Waterton Road on left.  Take Waterton Rd 1.6 miles east to North Rampart Range Road, turn right and go south 2.3 miles to Roxborough Park Road.  Turn left and follow signs to the park (2.2 miles). 
Trip will end around 11:30 a.m. so lunch is optional but bring plenty of water.  There is a nice place to enjoy lunch at the Visitor Center.  State parks pass required.
