[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/3/23

Last day of week 2, and things were even slower than the earlier few days.  I saw Norm Lewis last evening, birding at the Arsenal,  and he commented that he had been reading "between the lines" in my posts.....yep, it is the pits.

I've been comparing this year with last year, with last year being a fairly good year.  Today I went back and looked at the most recent two bad years (2021 and 2017).  The number of birds caught in the first two weeks those years was almost identical - 383 new in 2021 and 390 in 2017.  This year, we are at 184.  The biggest difference is that in both 2021 and 2017 there were one or two bigger days at the very beginning, when we caught lots of Yellow Warblers and House Wrens - summer breeders at Barr.  Those species are not around in normal numbers this year, and I think that speaks to the conditions at Barr specifically and probably the strange weather we've had throughout the metro area this year.  Now we are into the time when we are monitoring birds migrating through; we will see what the next few weeks look like regarding those species.

Okay here are the nine new birds caught yesterday:

Western Wood-Pewee 1
House Wren 4
Gray Catbird 1 (FOS)
Northern Waterthrush 1
Wilson's Warbler 2

Off today; back at it tomorrow/Tuesday. If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends.  Click here to make a reservation.
