[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Pineridge Natural Area Banding Report 9/15-16

What an interesting time! After very low numbers early this week, we had 21 new birds on Friday, and then a single new bird (and two recaptures from this season) on Saturday. Hopefully we'll see a little more activity next week! We did have a Cooper's Hawk in one of the nets today, but she shook herself loose during extraction. Definitely livened up the day, and we still count it as a win to have seen one of these lovely raptors up close, even if we didn't get to band her. We also had the station's first education groups-- some fifth graders on Friday, and the Trailfeathers birding group on Saturday-- and thankfully everyone got to see at least one bird despite the low numbers today!

This report is for 9/15 through 9/16.

New bands:
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Black-capped Chickadee - 2
MacGillivray's Warbler - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 15
Lincoln's Sparrow - 2
Spotted Towhee - 1

Recaptures:
Wilson's Warbler - 2 (banded this fall)

This banding station will be operating Tuesday through Saturday, weather and trail closures permitting, from sunrise until about 12:30 PM. This week we are opening at 6:30. Peak hours for seeing birds in hand aren't yet established, but so far we have low to moderately steady activity from about 7 to 9 and another small push at around 10:30. Park at the Maxwell Natural Area parking lot and walk south along the trail towards Dixon Reservoir, and you will see our table and awning on the little hillside to the left of the main trail. Consider signing up for your visit at this link;  registration is free and helps us plan ahead for visitor numbers. I hope to see you there!
