Re: [cobirds] Dickcissels in Canon City/ Fremont Co

Sadly much of the hayfield on MacKenzie Ave in Canon City was cut today and I suspect the remaining hay will be cut tomorrow.  In the past week I had identified 3 different male Dickcissels singing 3 different songs (I have recorded them with one final recording tonight but have to convert the files and then turn them into sonograms yet and will post when I have them on my Birds and Nature blog).  Tonight I found 2 male Dickcissels still singing with one on the far north side that has not yet been cut and the other on the far south side of the field in the juniper where hay not yet cut.  I did not see any females but went late to go when traffic was lower to do some recording (very challenging with vehicles making a lot of noise as they go by)

I hope the females nested in areas by trees or ditch where they do not cut.  Otherwise the nests and any young will be lost.

The hayfield at MacKenzie and Grandview in Canon City where multiple Dickcissels were found by SeEtta Moss, was being cut today around 11am. The birds were calling and flying back and forth. A female with food was repeatedly perched on the uncut edge of the field appearing to fly down into the cut area.
