[cobirds] NE Colorado Birding

John Vanderpoel and I headed to NE Colorado today for some mid-summer birding.  Our first stop in Logan County was along US 138 west of Crook where we had about 15 Upland Sandpipers and a couple of Dickcissels.  At Tamarack Pond we had several Field Sparrows and a Baltimore Oriole, but most surprisingly, two Green Herons.  The bridge over the South Platte on Red Lion Road was closed due to recent flood damage, so we had to detour to Sedgwick (County) to cross the river.  On the way we found a Playa at the intersection of Sedgwick CR 12 and 23 that was filled with shorebirds including Stilt Sandpiper and Semi-palmated Sandpiper.  But that was nothing compared to Red Lion were we had 14 shorebird species including Black-necked Stilt, Short-billed Dowitcher, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Willet, Least, Bairds, Stilt, Semi-palmated and Western Sandpipers.  We ended our day in Wray were north of town we had Cassin’s Sparrow, Northern Bobwhite and a couple more Upland Sandpipers.
