Good Morning All,
Between 7 and 7:30 this morning I spread some seed and watched the
birds at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. Both the
Golden-crowned Sparrow and lone adult White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's)
appeared with all the other regulars, but I did not see the Slate-
colored Fox Sparrow. Not sure whether the bird has moved on or was
just content to stay in the thick brush. Not quite as many juncos as
a week ago in the snow, but good numbers of Gray-headed & Pink-sided
with fewer Oregon and Slate-colored. Had a Cassiar's but no White-
winged (several last week).
Happy to report that the pair of Peregrine Falcons have returned to
Ship Rock. Not sure when they returned (I last checked on Tuesday).
The pair was flying around Ship Rock and Creation Rock calling and
harassing the male Raven. The pair of Ravens that built their nest on
the west end of Creation Rock will be subject to some hostile
interaction with the Peregrines in the upcoming weeks. Wonder how
many of the Raven chicks will survive??? Saw the Peregrines perch on
both Ship Rock and Creation Rock.
As far as the Prairie Falcons, I observed the female sitting on a
ledge (eyrie???) on Park Cave Rock before she flew to a perch on Frog
Rock, where she proceeded to call. I presumed the male was out hunting.
