Hi COBirders,
This was the first time this month that I was able to attempt a hawk watching session from my regular site, in the burned area of Mountain Shadows, on Colorado Springs' Westside. (Trips and weather have kept me away). The rock outcropping remains unchanged, although a little singed, and the remaining trees there block less of the sky than they used to, but most of the oak and mountain mahogany that covered the hillside are just charred stumps. The fire was nine months ago, yesterday.
Seen today, midday:
1 Red-tailed Hawk
2 Un-Id'd distant buteos (looked like Broad-winged profiles, but ???) (shorter, wider wings than Red-tails, and flapped the entire time in view - ???)
2 Prairie Falcons
1 Am Kestrel
1 Cooper's Hawk female
plus, to add to the COBirds string, 30+ Western Bluebirds, decidedly moving North, in groups of 2-10. (I also saw 25+ at the USAFA last week around the birdhouses I have set up, looking like they were setting up territories)
White-throated Swifts
3 Com Raven
N Flicker
Steller's Jay
W Scrub Jay
BB Magpies
and a curious Mountain Chickadee.
Happy Migration,
Steve Brown
