Topi Martínez and I went to Lagerman about an hour before sunset today. No peeps, a lot of killdeer and other expected ducks, some in eclipse plumage and others not as much. At one point a peregrine falcon flew in and chased a barn swallow, ignoring all the chubby ducks on the water. A fierce chase with much acrobatics by both birds ensued, and finally the falcon caught the swallow. Shortly after, the falcon flew towards us on the north shore of the reservoir and had what was left of the swallow on the sandy shore, standing and eating a little S/he stayed for awhile and then took off toward the west, just before a couple with two dogs on leashes headed down the trail. It was pretty exciting. The two resident adult bald eagles were there, as well as a few red tailed hawks, but we didn’t see any harriers.
