Andrew McFadden and I were investigating a report of a Red Knot at the south end of Boyd Lake State Park this afternoon when we found a couple of goodies. No Red Knot but I located a juvenile/female Ruff instead followed by Andrew finding a Buff-breasted Sandpiper which is always a good bird for Larimer County. We were keying in on these birds and trying to get better and clearer photos to no avail and unfortunately, a helicopter flew over and spooked everything on the south shore. Andrew had to leave and I was unable to relocate the Ruff and only had a brief view of the BBSA before it disappeared. It's a bummer that we got such crappy photos. I do feel like the birds stuck there this afternoon and hopefully, they stay overnight. There is a fair amount of grassy scrub around, puddles, and good mudflats on the south end of Boyd Lake currently. I'm hoping more eyes tomorrow bring better viewing opportunities and photos. If you are interested in trying for these birds, park at Seven Lakes Park and walk over to the south end of the lake. A scope is almost a requirement.
