Hey, all. Andrew Floyd and I were in Routt County for the 6th annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival the past four days, Sept. 1-4, 2017. A quick summary:
Yampa River Preserve, Sept. 1. Pinyon jay, Bewick wren, Virginia's warbler, lots of gray catbirds still hanging on, and a nice mix of expected western migrants. (Yep on Bewick-no-s, Virginia-yes-s.)

Yampa River Botanic Park, Sept. 1. Willow flycatcher, several evening grosbeaks, and broad-tailed hummingbirds and white-lined sphinx moths tending the same flowers.
Rehder Ranch (private), Sept. 2. Black-chinned hummingbird, American dipper, and more green-tailed towhees than you could shake a stick at.
Catamount Lake (private), Sept. 2. 25 white-faced eye-bye (new AOS-sanctioned plural) and 2 Franklin gulls.
Carpenter Ranch (private), Sept. 3. Lots of migrants, including an American redstart. Also 17 Woodhouse scrub-jays emptying out of a narrowleaf cottonwood.
Yampavian Ranch (private), Sept. 3. Swallows galore, including 100+ violet-green swallows and a couple of tardy bank swallows.
Morgan Bottoms Road, Sept. 4. Ungodly numbers of Brewer blackbirds and a divine plenitude of sandhill cranes. Also pronghorn, alk (per local pronunciation), mule deer, and a peregrine falcon. Definitely got some of that "American Serengeti" thing going there.
West Rabbit Ears Pass, Sept. 4. A serious infestation of golden-crowned kinglets. Also gray jay, brown creeper, that sort of thing...
Cedar waxwings were absolutely everywhere, even out on the sagebrush flats, the whole time we were in Routt County.
