The Second Annual "Nunn Guy" Birding Classic: 100 Birds, One County!
Saturday May 20th 7AM meet at Nunn Cafe.
This annual event travels all over Weld County trying to score 100 bird species. Last year we had 102 bird species. We'll travel the likes of Weld CR 124 Pond, Pawnee National Grassland, Crom Lake, Latham Reservoir/Beebe Draw/Stewart's Pond and the like. It will be rapid-fire birding in hopes of achieving 100 species by trip's end--mid to late afternoon. People can drop whenever they wish. We'll be working the rectangular boundary of Windsor-La Salle-Keota-Weld CR 124 be sure to track birds as you come into the area as you make your way to Nunn so we can get a good head start on the count! We'll tally what you see at Nunn Cafe to begin count list.
The 193,060-acre Pawnee National Grassland lies 35 miles east of Fort Collins and 25 miles northeast of Greeley in Weld County.
Facilities are limited on the grassland, recreation opportunities are not. The Pawnee is an internationally known birding area. It supports many bird species, especially during migration. The Colorado State Bird, the lark bunting, is very common on the grassland in spring and summer. The grassland also has many unique high plains bird species such as the mountain plover, burrowing owl and many birds of prey.
We can have lunch at Crow Valley Campground. Bring your own "stuff".
Participants should plan to meet at 7:00 a.m. at the Nunn Cafe parking lot in Nunn about half-mile south of Hwy 85 and Weld CR 100.
The trip is free and no pre-registration is required. If you are a member of ColoradoBirder.club you can also RSVP by clicking the JOIN button (right side of page) of this event. Anyone with an interest is welcome to come along regardless of their birding skills.
