Hi everyone,So today my mom and I decided to participate in the Global Big Day.Team Name:Gobbling GrosbeaksStarting off with Boulder Creek(East CU Campus) we only had one species of note, a PLUMBEOUS VIREO was singing early in the morning at 5:55am.We incidentally went to Skunk Canyon only spending 10 minutes, but we were able to see a flyover BAND TAILED PIGEON, and a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER.We quickly made our way to BARR LAKE(ADAMSCO), which might have been the best possible idea since right at the entence bridge I was able to get nice looks at TENNESEE WARBLER, and a RED EYED VIREO. Walking ahead lead me to find a singing adult male NASHVILLE WARBLER, along with some COMMONG YELLOWTHROATS, 2 more MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS, 30 YELLOW WARBLERS and a female ORCHARD ORIOLE.Still at BARR LAKE, we started focusing on flycatchers moving torward the dead Aspens and Cottenwoods, we were able to see a single WESTERN WOOD PEWEE, a LEAST FLYCATCHER, and 7 EASTERN KINGBIRDS which seem to have just come in. WESTERN KINGBIRDS were everywhere aswell, I think I tallied a total of about 40 WEKI's.I was also able to get an amazing look at a late WHITE THROATED SPARROW while walking ahead.Looking over the water only lead us to find two notable species; a single FORSTERS TERN and a couple of male WOOD DUCKS.Later at Waterton Canyon(JefCO)We started off with a singing GRAY CATBIRD, and 3 singing YELLOW BREASTED CHATS. Walking down into the canyon we found a BLACK CHINNED HUMMINGBID, WILSON'S WARBLER, about a billion HOUSE WRENS(40),and a singing AMERICAN REDSTART.But the bird of the morning was at Wateron, and wasn't a Warbler....while looking at a couple male BLACK HEADED GROSBEAKS we heard a song that sounded a lot like a BALTIMORE ORIOLE, of course we doubted this but ater looking for the bird for about 5 minutes we were able to get a decent but clear look at it, and it was an obvious BAOR.The rest of the morning was pretty relaxed but in the heat of the day after seeing only house wrens, Grackles, and a few Yellow Warblers at the Greenlee Preserve(BOCO); a PALM WARBLER came out singing its trilling song with a bang, and quickly hid back in a dense cottenwood. At Walden Ponds we basically had Yellow Warblers and Killdeers for about an hour straight but then like the Palm Warbler we had a suprise. PHILLADELPHIA VIREO, pop right out of a flock of Yellow Warblers and Warbling Vireos near one of the private ponds, also a male WESTERN TANANGER was at the duck pond.At Union Reservoir(WECO) there wasn't much but 2 STILT SANDPIPERS a LEAST SANDPIPER 1 FORSTERS TERN and a BLACK TERN flying around the res.End of the day species count: 142Good BirdingLuke PhenegerLongmont,Colorado
