Like all of the young Turks, I continued my “big day” today, but it was an protracted “big weekend”. Along with John Vanderpoel, I lead a group of 8 friends over a Friday-Sunday weekend of intense birding in the SE quadrant of the state. We ended up with 160 species (I think) for our F-SA-SU efforts.
Today we started day #3 at Lamar CC which was pretty pedestrian. Then we turned north and revisited the ridiculous SE pool of Nee-noshee. We added White-rumped Sandpiper, Sanderling, Willet, Long-billed Curlew, White-faced Ibis, Ring-necked Pheasant, Great Horned Owl and Canvasback to our already long list for the spot. At the Locust Grove we had a Nashville Warbler that all eight were able to see including yours truly who was 7th of 8. Over visits on Friday and today I can report that eBird shows me that we had 101 species in Kiowa County this weekend. Stop and consider that right now there are only 19 people on the eBird all-time list with more than 100 species.
Our only other bird-adding stops were in and around Kit Carson in Cheyenne County. One of the fun things about birding in Cheyenne County is that Tony Leukering keeps the county under such tight wraps that if you don’t get at least a half-dozen flags, your aren’t really trying. Today I had 7 including Black-crowned Night Heron, Spotted Sandpiper, Western Tanager (twice), Common Nighthawk and Black-headed Grosbeak. If you are ever there in migration, I suggest you walk the block or two east of City Park on 5th Ave. It’s been really good for me!
