A DFO field trip on 5/1 kicked of DFO's May 2017 "Big Month". This endeavor includes birds seen on DFO field trips in May within in a 9 county area centered on the Denver Metro Area. You can read more on p. 9 of the DFO's May "Lark Bunting":
And as field trip checklists are entered in eBird over the month, they will populate an ongoing status report that can be viewed here (check back soon if intial results are not yet showing) :
Anyway, Mallard kicked off the Big Month as our first species, flying over our 5:30 am meeting spot. And we rounded off the day with 82 species. Off and running!
Our main morning stop was Aurora Reservoir. Highlights included 4 White-winged Scoters, Common Loon, 4 Am. Avocets, 17 Willets, 1 Marbled Godwit, 8 Sanderlings, 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 6 Wilson's Phalaropes, a straggling Common Goldeneye, 4 Redheads, Peregrine Falcon, 4 Bonaparte's Gulls, 2 Forster's Terns, and 2 Bald Eagles. We enjoyed ogling two Pied-billed Grebes sitting in plain view on their floating nests in the west arm of the lake, near the Marina.
We explored eastward along roads in the prairie, but there was very little landbird migration, so this was not too exciting. In fact, other than 2 Western Kingbirds, a few White-crowned Sparrows and, of course, swallows, we found very few migrant landbirds out prairie-ward. We did have a nice tally of 18 Loggerhead Shrikes, though.
We headed back to Cherry Creek State Park in the later afternoon to round off the day, adding some more shorebirds, a smattering of landbirds and such.
DFO invites birders to participate on the many free field trips of our May Big Month effort. You can register for trips here:
