Yesterday I spotted all three of our Accipiters while doing New Year's birding in the Ken Caryl Valley, with a highlight of an adult Northern Goshawk at Massey Draw just below the forested slopes.
-- Early this morning an immature Northern Goshawk flew into my yard, preceded by panic and mayhem from the other birds. It dashed after a magpie and pursued it through the tight branches in the crown of a pine, but lost the hunt. It perched in a cottonwood nearby, and for a time all surrounding bird life was as if there was none. The hawk has moved on, but the silence following its presence still hold's sway even 40 minutes later.
