[cobirds] Raptors, E El Paso Co, Saturday

Hi COBirders,

Susan Craig and I were out looking for shrikes to band today, on the plains of Eastern El Paso County, mostly between Ellicott and Hanover. We only caught one shrike, a recapture from a couple of years ago, and saw four more, but without any other takers at the baited traps.

What we did see a lot of was raptors : numerous Red-tailed, Ferruginous and Rough-legged Hawks, several N Harrier, a pair of juv Bald Eagles on a power pole nowhere near water, dozens of Am Kestrels, and at least four Prairie Falcons. On a couple of occasions we saw that the shrikes were noticeably nervous about the nearby kestrels, and skittish about dropping to the ground, probably for good reason.

A beautiful day on the plains today, warm, and calm, (which it seemingly NEVER is out there!).

Good birding, (Go Broncos!)
