Today (Sunday) I found 2 male Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 male Red-naped Sapsucker and 2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers around Canon City. Usually sapsuckers can be found earlier in the fall in Canon City but not this year. Given the late date I expect these sapsuckers are not migrating but are here to over winter. Every winter 2-3 of these sapsucker species overwinter in Canon City where the temperatures do not generally get far below zero so the sapsuckers are able to drill into trees for food. I have uploaded pics of the Red-naped Sapsucker to my Birds and Nature blog but will have to wait until tomorrow to upload pics of the other sapsuckers.
I also saw several distant Greater White-fronted Geese with a large flock of Canada Geese in the agricultural fields off of MacKenzie Ave. I saw them for the first time yesterday and again today but still too distant to get photos.You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
