I decided to try to photograph the Tennessee Warbler on the CSU campus before the volleyball game this afternoon, and the bird was still hanging out in the same trees it has been for the past couple days. If you are up on the hill on the southwest side of the arboretum, it has been in the three tall trees next to each other that still have a decent number of leaves on them. I built a small stick pile at the base of one of the trees. While I was there, I ran into Dave Leatherman who let me know where the mystery bird was found (I didn't realize it was seen this morning). We decided to look for it and quickly flushed the bird, which was in fact an American Woodcock. We didn't get great looks the first time, but I flushed it a second time while walking around the apartments and got better more identifiable looks. We decided to give it a break when Dave had to leave and I decided to head over to the volleyball game.
Around 3:30 some other Larimer County folks met up to search again, and in an hour and a half only Austin Hess and I had decent looks in the one time we flushed it. I think the bird is still around, and if anyone is interested in looking for it I would suggest that it be done as a group to avoid overly disturbing the bird. It would be nice to photograph the bird (which still has only been seen in flight) to fully document this rarity. I, along with others from Team BrachyRAMphus, will meet at the parking lot on Pitkin Street just east of Shields Street on the CSU Campus near the football stadium construction (go past the stop sign on Pitkin and the parking lot will be on the right) between 8:00 and 8:15 tomorrow morning if anybody would like to join. Thanks to John and Joe for an awesome find!
