[cobirds] RFI -- Conifer Cones and Crossbills

All,

As promised, I'm writing again to solicit information regarding the whereabouts of large concentrations of crossbills and conifer cones.

This fall/winter I'm hoping to do similar fieldwork that will compare the dynamics of reproductive isolation between types 2 and 5 during a large spruce cone crop to reproductive isolation during the absence of a spruce cone crop when crossbills are predominately utilizing their respective "key conifers" (the latter being the data I collected this past winter/spring). As such, if you happen to notice any high elevation spruce forests with a large amount of developing cones this summer, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. I've heard about a good spruce crop in the Gore Range, but last I heard there weren't any crossbills in the area yet.

Of course, if a good spruce cone crop doesn't develop, I still need to collect more data on 2 and 5 when they're foraging on Ponderosa and Lodgepole. If you happen to notice a good Ponderosa crop developing, especially in an area somewhat near Lodgepole, I would also greatly appreciate hearing about this.

Good birding,
