I'd highly recommend eBird to get you started, or to at least point you in general to specific areas depending on which target birds you are looking for.  This is also a great resource:

I'm sure someone else can recommend other sites, but these are the two resources I use most.  I'm sure we can help more if you have specific questions regarding certain spots or species.
